Business Interruption – 9, 10, 11 June 2015

11 May 2015, 11:00

In our much-anticipated June Insurance Bootcamp, we will take an in-depth look at business interruption cover (BI). BI appears difficult because it involves the inner-workings of a company’s financial statements, which then presents the danger of misunderstanding how to calculate and structure a policy. The bootcamps’ focus, therefore, we will be on real claims engagement, rather than policy wording, including a look at the accounting behind underwriting and claims. In this way, attendants will walk away with a wealth of real-world technical knowledge to apply to their client’s next major interruption event.

Delegates will receive 2.5 CPD hours.

Some of the key areas for discussion include:

  • A BI calculator tool to mitigate bad claims
  • Common mistakes, case studies and claim examples
  • Loss of attraction cover and claims extensions
  • The shortfalls when indemnity periods and sums insured are incorrect
  • The correct gross profit calculation
  • Additional increase costs of working vs. increases in cost of working only
  • Clarity on Sasria’s three distinct areas of underwriting

Covering these areas and much more, our bootcamp will offer a practical look at the crucial aspects of managing the complexities of business interruption in order to offer clients the best protection while mitigating losses on all fronts

Director at Proloss

Paul has handled a number of large and complex losses in the property and casualty markets (both material damage and business interruption aspects). His claims handling experience includes distribution, retail and petro chemical risks, amongst others. He has worked on claims involving some of Southern Africa’s biggest corporations over the last 20 years including Barloworld, Tiger Brands, SAB Miller, Edcon, Engen and Petro SA, as well as parastatals such as Transnet, Eskom and Telkom.

Ryan has broad-spectrum experience ranging from corner stores to top 100 listed companies on JSE. He has a wealth of experience in business interruption events, with his expertise also extending to material damage and professional indemnity to name a few.

Adrian Chester

Specialist technical underwriting at Mutual and Federal

With a background in fire management, Adrian’s key areas of focus include setting underwriting standards and guidelines, decision making, auditing, quoting, renewing complex accounts, analysis and SAIA representation. He became curious about the inner-workings of insurance during his time at United Bank’s credit department. He then garnered a deeper understanding through consultation with Commercial Union, at which point he joined their internship programme. With his love for insurance cemented with a deeper understanding of the industry, honorable business is one of his core values.
